After a century of rule by France, Algeria became independent in 1962. It is located in northern Africa, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Morocco and Tunisia. The terrain is mostly high plateau and desert with some mountains (the highest of which is Tahat, at 3,003 m). The climate is arid to semiarid. There are mild, wet winters with hot, dry summers along coast, and drier weather with cold winters and hot summers on the high plateau.
