Greenland is the world's largest island, located northeast of Canada. Most of the island lies north of the Arctic Circle, so this is certainly the place to go to experience 24 hours of sunlight during midsummer, or to see northern lights throughout the rest of the year. Although about 84% covered by a flat to gradually sloping icecap, there is a narrow, mountainous, barren, rocky coastline which is snow-free each summer.

Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark; since 1979 Greenland has been a self-governing overseas administrative division of Denmark. The population of 55,000 is predominantly Inuit. The Greenlandic people speak Greenlandic (East Inuit), Danish and English.
