Facts and Online Map of Mauritius

Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean, off southern Africa, and east of Madagascar. Despite being so close to Africa, Mauritius is more influenced by its British and French background and its large imported Indian workforce.

Discovered by the Portuguese in 1505, Mauritius was subsequently held by the Dutch, French, and British before independence was attained in 1968. The terrain consists of a small coastal plain rising to discontinuous mountains encircling central plateau. The highest point is 828 m above sea level.
