Moldova is located in eastern Europe, between Romania and Ukraine. The former name of this republic is Moldavia. Formerly ruled by Romania, Moldova became part of the Soviet Union at the close of World War II. Although independent from the USSR since 1991, Russian forces have remained on Moldovan territory supporting the Slavic majority population (mostly Ukrainians and Russians).

The terrain is rolling steppe, sloping gradually southward to the Black Sea. It is the smallest of the former Soviet republics, with a picturesque landscape.
