Newfoundland covers an area of 222,500 sq. miles (371,000 sq. km's), and supports a population of 550,000. The capital of St. John's is home to 174,000 and is located on the southeastern tip of the island. Newfoundland was the first province in Canada to be discovered and the last to join the confederation, in 1949.
