Information and Online map of Svalbard

Located in northern Europe, Svalbard is between the Arctic Ocean, Barents Sea, Greenland Sea, and Norwegian Sea, north of Norway. First discovered by the Norwegians in the 12th century, the islands served as an international whaling base during the 17th and 18th centuries. Norway's sovereignty was recognized in 1920; five years later it officially took over the territory.

The climate is decidedly arctic, tempered by warm North Atlantic Current, giving cool summers and cold winters. The North Atlantic Current flows along the west and north coasts of Spitsbergen, keeping the water open and navigable most of the year. The terrain consists of wild, rugged mountains. Much of the high land is ice covered. The west coast is clear of ice about one-half of the year. Fjords indent the west and north coasts. With a map of Svalbard and a Svalbard travel guide, you will be sure to make the most of your time in this country.
