Wake Island is found in the North Pacific Ocean. It is only 6.5 square kilometres in size; an atoll of three coral islands built up on an underwater volcano. The central lagoon is a former crater and the islands are part of the rim. There are no indigenous inhabitants and very few residents. Wake Island was formerly an important commercial aviation base. It is now occasionally used by the US military, some commercial cargo planes, and for emergency landings of transpacific flights. Wake Island is an unincorporated territory of the US administered from Washington, DC by the Department of the Interior.
