Rare map The Islands of Corsica and Sardinia by Gerardus Mercator - circa 1637. This map was compiled by one of the leading intellectual minds of his time, Gerardus Mercator. His mapping projection allowed people to sail the World using the stars as their guide. This very rare map is over 380 years old.

In 1604, Jodocus Hondius purchased the plates of Gerard Mercator's atlas, added about 40 maps to Mercator's original number, and from 1606 published enlarged editions in many languages still under Mercator's name, but with his own name as publisher. These atlases have become known as the Mercator/Hondius series.

There are two maps on this copper engraving showing Corsica at a scale of 1:771,600 and Sardinia at 1:1,157,400. Shows the local relief.

Measures 7 Inches wide x 11.5 Inches tall. This monotone map is in near fine condition and exceptionally rare. The map comes from a World Atlas.
