Navigate with confidence using the 12-Inch Binnacle Parallel Rule, an indispensable tool for plotting courses, transferring bearings, and measuring distances on nautical charts.
Traditional rules can slip or corrode in salty air; the Binnacle Parallel Rule is built to outperform:
Anti-Slip Cork Friction Pads: Equipped with premium cork pads on the underside to grip the chart firmly. This prevents frustrating "walking" errors when transferring bearings across long distances.
Corrosion-Resistant Hardware: Built with heavy-duty, rust-proof metal hinges that maintain a "buttery-smooth" parallel motion even after years of exposure to sea air.
Crystal Clear Visibility: Crafted from 5mm thick, high-impact crystal-clear plastic, allowing you to see every depth sounding and hazard marker on the chart beneath.
Inscribed Degree Markings: Features high-contrast degree and inch scales, making it easy to read bearings at a glance without a separate protractor.
Professional 5mm Thickness: Substantial weight and thickness ensure the rule resists warping and provides a sturdy edge for pencil lines.
Compact & Portable: At 12 inches, it is the perfect size for standard navigation kits and smaller chart tables found on modern sailing vessels.

Plotting a course is a fundamental skill that connects the physical world to your nautical chart. Use this guide to master the "slide-and-align" technique with your Binnacle 12-Inch Parallel Rule.
Identify Points: Mark your starting position (Point A) and your destination (Point B) on the chart with a pencil.
Align the Rule: Open the parallel rule slightly and align one of the outer edges so it perfectly connects Point A and Point B.
Draw the Line: Holding the rule firmly, draw a light pencil line between the two points. This is your Course Line.
Since your course line is rarely perfectly aligned with a compass rose, you must "walk" the rule to the nearest one to find your bearing.
Hold Steady: Press down firmly on the half of the rule that is currently on your course line.
Slide: Using the handles, swing/slide the free half of the rule toward the nearest Compass Rose on the chart.
Alternate: Once the moving half is flat, press down on it and release the first half. Move the first half to catch up.
Repeat: Continue this "step-by-step" movement until the edge of your rule passes directly through the center cross (+) of the Compass Rose.
Find the Intersection: Look at where the edge of your rule (which is still at the center of the rose) crosses the outer degree scale of the Compass Rose.
Read the Degree: The point where the rule exits the circle is your True North bearing.
Using the Rule's Markings: Because your Binnacle rule has inscribed degree markings, you can also align the center mark of the rule with any Meridian of Longitude (the vertical lines on your chart) to read the True Course directly from the ruler's scale!
The "Pinch" Grip: Use the cork friction pads to your advantage. Apply pressure to the center of the rule when sliding to ensure the hinges don't "creep" or lose their angle.
Check for Hazards: Always look along the entire length of your plotted line for shoals, rocks, or restricted zones before setting off.
Clean and Clear: Since your rule is crystal clear, periodically wipe it with a microfiber cloth to ensure you can see small depth soundings through the plastic.
