British Virgin Islands MapsBritish Virgin Islands Travel GuidesInformation and Online map of the British Virgin IslandsThe Virgin Islands are a collection of coral and volcanic islands in the Caribbean Sea. Some of the islands are administered by the USA and some by Britain. The British Virgin Islands comprise 36 different islands, including Tortola ("land of turtle doves"), Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. The capital city is Road Town. The islands are popular among yachters, divers and people looking for a quiet, subtropical beach to relax on. The land is largely made up of rolling hills and beaches. Anageda is very flat, whereas Tortola rises to 521 metres (1,780 feet) at Mount Sage, the highest point in all the Virgin Islands. The other islands range in topography between these two. Historically settled by the Dutch, British planters took control of the islands in 1666, and they have remained under British control ever since. The population in 2000 was approximately 19,000. Most of the inhabitants are descendants from African slaves. There are no descendants of the original people who lived on these islands prior to European settlement. Due to the close proximity and economic ties to the US Virgin Islands, the currency is the US dollar. The economy, one of the most prosperous in the Caribbean, is highly dependent on tourism.
